crossing the negev

I was in Eilat planning to cross into Jordan and head toward Petra but could not get across the border. Instead I read that Caesarea was a major port and town so I headed north though the Negev and drive all the way non-stop. But when I got there the town was in ruins - last time I rely on Josephus for travel advice.
